Yes, Mo wished it could have lasted forever. Yes, he was sad he wasn't old enough to go to the showcase. But Mo really had a great time. For those of you confused about what IDKE is it stands for the International Drag King Extravaganza and it's wonderful. Mo has never seen so many hot drag kings, sexy femmes, and fabulous genderqueer people before. All weekend you could track Mo down just by following the trail of drool. Mo's new drag heroes are the Chicago Kings ( www.chicagokings.com) and the Disposable Boy Toys ( www.disposableboytoys.com). He met lots of drag kings and learned all kinds of new stuff.
For his first workshop Mo went to a really interesting panel discussion about what it means to be transgender in the drag community. It featured Damien Danger, Michelle, and Cody Pendant who are so sweet, smart, and fabulous. Mo was a little sad about the workshop because he felt like the people who really needed to talk about transphobia within the king community were not there. Mo was also sad he could not go to this workshop and Chip Starlight's first workshop because Mo thinks Chip is the best.
For his second workshop Mo went to a workshop called "Sex, drag, and rock n' roll!" put on by DBT members Jake and Damien Danger. It really helped him put in perspective some of the sexy things he does on stage and how they might be percieved by the audience. Now Mo wants to do a number encouraging safer sex practices. Of course much to the disappointment of his fans he will not actually have sex on stage, just elude to it. In conclusion, the Dangers are so hot!
Instead of going to the third set of workshops, Mo went to see a moving called "Toilet Training" (he thinks) about gendered bathrooms and transgender people. After Dean Spade founder of the Sylvia Rivera Law Project ( www.srlp.org) was arrested for using the men's bathroom at Grand Central Station this film by Tara Mateik was made out of a collection of stories about people who have experienced discrimination, harassment, or violence using restrooms that are segregated by gender. Mo wants to order a copy of the film and show it in St. Louis. He has always had issues with gendered bathrooms and wishes everyone could see this really well done and informative film and be inspired to rise up and break the gender binary surrounding the toilet!
For the last workshop Mo went to "I'm not you're bio-queen" put on by femme drag performers of the Chicago Kings and other fabulous femmes. He learned lots about developing femme drag performance for himself and his non-existent troupe. It really opened his eyes to the misogyny existing in drag kinging and inspired all sorts of fabulous new ideas. He also learned a really fun acting excercise/dance. Now Mo is planning to do a number with Lucy (Beau Cockson) where Lucy is a hot librarian and they are in love with each other in a really dorky intellectual-fetish sort of way.
Mo went to Dragdom which was really great. His favorite acts were by District 202, the Queen Bees, The Disposable Boy Toys, the Chicago Kings, and of course the Bent Boyz. Mo was not old enough to attend the Showcase which was for 21 and older because it was in a bar. Instead he went to a drag show at District 202 which was wonderful.
District 202
Mo would like to thank the Bent Boyz for letting him tag-along. He hopes he wasn't too annoying. |
